We require blood samples from
chickens (of any age) free from cross-contamination.

Have all tools within reach and ready before handling the
chick. Ensure everything is clean and sterile to prevent infection and cross-contamination.
Make sure to clean and sterilize your clippers in between each chick.
- Gently restrain the chick:
Wrap the chick in a soft towel to gently immobilize it, leaving one foot exposed. Hold it securely but not tightly to avoid injury or stress. Use an alcohol swab to clean the toe. Let it dry for a few seconds.
Clip the toenail and apply minimal pressure- just enough to
allow a drop to form. Once a drop of blood appears, allow the drop to fall on
the lid of the collection tube. It makes collection relatively easy. We
just need ONE small drop of blood. Close the tub by using the table to close
the lid with one hand. Please label the tubes and baggies with the associates
sample number (1,2,3) not the birds banding or tag pattern. Please use the
order form to put in your banding pattern for your own refence but the sample
number is how we will associate the sample with each bird.
- Stop the bleeding and monitor the chick:
If bleeding continues you can apply a small amount of styptic
powder or cornstarch. Return chick to its warm and safe environment.

You will receive an email once your results are ready.
If for some reason your results are unclear, we will complete
a rerun using the blood sample provided. Please note that for clear results we
will need the samples not to be cross- contaminated. Blood collection is your
responsibility, please reach out to us if you have any additional questions or
look up videos of how to complete proper blood collection to avoid
cross-contamination.
